To the Menlo Park City Council:
Item D-5 on tonight’s agenda requests the City Council to pass a resolution asking the California Legislature and the Governor to prohibit timber clear-cutting in the state. I urge you to place this resolution on the next City Council agenda for discussion and to approve it at that time.
Clear-cutting involves replacing a diverse healthy forest ecosystem with a plantation-type tree farm. While clear-cutting is already banned in San Mateo County, there are many logging areas where it is still permitted. Clear-cutting elsewhere in northern California negatively impacts us in Menlo Park in a number of ways:
• The total disruption of existing vegetation that clear-cutting entails results in decreased water capture; (think drought)
• A clear-cut site emits more carbon than it stores for at least the first 20 years; (think global warming)
• Trees planted closely together to enhance yield increase fire risk; (think wildfires)
• Clear-cut areas provide poor habitat for animals we work to preserve; (think endangered wildlife)
• Clear-cutting has a negative impact on tourism and various outdoor activities important to the state’s economy; (think the state budget).
Timber can be harvested using much less destructive methods as is demonstrated in the 5 Bay Area counties where clear-cutting is banned.
Thank you for considering this letter.
