grade crossings

Honorable council members,

Your subcommittee will begin discussions on CalTrain grade crossings on Wednesday evening. Its great that the city might establish a position to help CalTrain move forward on a long-needed but expensive project.

I hope you will remember that the City has considered crossings before, including at the October 2008 high speed rail charrette (Atherton, Menlo Park and Palo Alto) at which the clear consensus was that our cities should press for an underground CalTrain to accommodate the crossings. Whether in a trench or tunnel, only an underground train route respects our downtown, visually and functionally - as well as the hundreds of residences along the tracks in the three cities. It would send the wrong message to invite overhead train alignment or to attempt to re-route our small roadways under like 5th Avenue in RC.
