The City of Menlo Park and the Town of Atherton received a joint grant for improvements to Valparaiso which includes lighted crosswalks (in pavement lights), green bike lanes, "No Passing in the Bike Lane" signage, and sidewalk gap closure among other treatments. Menlo Park has taken the lead on this project and we are currently designing the improvements and we hope to be out to bid for construction within the year.

You can read more about the improvements and the process leading up to the grant application in the 2009 Staff report to the Menlo Park City Council at the following link: http://www.menlopark.org/DocumentCenter/Home/View/633

Subject: Crosswalk at Valparaiso and Elena

City Councils of Menlo Park and Atherton,

Today when I went running I crossed Valparaiso using the crosswalk at Elena Avenue, I was almost hit by a car when an impatient driver swerved around the car stopped for me at the crosswalk. The cross walk is not very well marked and for the safety of others in Menlo Park and Atherton I recommend that there are lights or flags as are seen at other crosswalks.

I believe that children and adults should be able to safely cross the street without having to worry about getting hit by a car. As you know Valparaiso is a very busy street and to have the crosswalk there marked as well as crosswalks on other busy streets would be a great value in Menlo Park and Atherton.

Thank you for your time and I really do hope that this problem is corrected I would love to see these two cities that are very much a part of my life work together to do something for the benefit of both communities.
