Bike lanes on El Camino for shopping and errands

Dear Council members,

As you get input on how to update El Camino, I'd like to share an anecdote
from earlier this week. I was heading for a meeting at Cafe Borrone.

First, I went to the Menlo Dry Cleaner and picked up an article of
clothing. Next, I went across the street to Staples to pick up some
labels. Then I went over to Cafe Borrone for the meeting. I used a
bicycle for these errands. This is a typical day.

A few points:
1) A parallel route on Alma or University would do absolutely nothing to
help residents conduct errands safely without a car

2) According to the community survey conducted by the transportation
department, a large majority of respondents currently use El Camino real
for shopping. And most were seeking safer pedestrian and bicycle

3) A large share of traffic on commercial streets such as El Camino is
typically people running local errands. Provide ways for people to run
errands safely, and more will do so without driving, taking cars of the

4) Using El Camino with a bicycle right now is problematic. It is difficult
for people to look at ECR today and imagine it being made safe. The staff
proposal for protected bike lanes uses international best practices to
create facilities that are safe for a large number of users.

I urge you to review and consider the staff proposal for protected bicycle
lanes as something that would make El Camino safer for many more residents,
for the most common local purpose.
