Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,

My name is Doug Bloch and I am political director for Teamsters Joint Council 7, which represents over 100,000 Teamsters in Northern California, the Central Valley, and Northern Nevada. In Menlo Park, we represent the Recology employees who provide invaluable solid waste and recycling services to your residents, UPS drivers, and more.

I am not sure if you are aware that the Teamsters are organizing Facebook drivers. Specifically, 87 drivers who work for a company called Loop Transportation which has a contract with Facebook to drive employees from all over the Bay Area to the company’s Menlo Park headquarters.

The Teamsters represent Loop Drivers at SFO and Oakland Airport and have enjoyed good labor relations with the company. But after our campaign began with the Facebook drivers, Loop stopped returning our calls. Instead, Loop brought in a squad of “union avoidance” consultants to work over the drivers aggressively in advance of an election that is scheduled for this Wednesday.

The drivers make fairly decent hourly wages, but they work split shifts, meaning they have to work 12-15 hours (with wait time) to make 8 hours of paid work. They also pay $1300 monthly for substandard health benefits. They are mostly workers of color.

We know that Menlo Park went to great lengths to attract Facebook to your city, and we are not out to hurt that relationship or the Company in any matter. We simply want Facebook to respect these workers’ democratic right to organize free from any interference or threats.

Tomorrow community supporters and Teamsters will be rallying to support the drivers. I am attaching a media advisory that is going out today, but I wanted you to hear from us directly concerning this issue.

If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me at 510-333-1179 <tel:510-333-1179>.

Respectfully yours,

Doug Bloch
