Brittany Maynard and Death with Dignity in California

Dear Councilmember,

By now you may have heard the story of Brittany Maynard, a 29-year old
California woman who was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor earlier this
year. Because Brittany wanted to avoid the kind of painful and traumatic
death that is typical of her illness, she needed health care that allowed
her to have medical aid in dying.

Brittany could not get the end-of-life care she needed in California. So
she left her home, her friends, and her community in our state to move to
Oregon, where a Death with Dignity law has given her access to the
medication she needs to have some control over her dying process.

Brittany's remaining time is short, but she is sharing her story in the
hope that her life and death can make a difference for others who want the
option of a dignified, peaceful death at the end of their lives -- without
having to uproot themselves and their families.

I urge you to read Brittany's story
and/or watch her video <http://www.thebrittanyfund.org/>. You can't help
Brittany, but you can help thousands of other mentally competent,
terminally ill Californians who find themselves in situations similar to

Compassion & Choices is honored to work with Brittany to share her story.
We would welcome the opportunity to provide more information about Death
with Dignity and our efforts to make California a place where medical aid
in dying is open, accessible, and legitimate.

All my best,

*Chris Riley*
