Fwd: Wallea Drive bike route signage, agenda item F-1

Dear Council Members: I noted in the staff report relating to agenda item F-1 (stop signs on Wallea Drive) that public correspondence to the bike commission had not been included. Herewith is a copy of my letter to the commission following their initial meeting on the subject. Two essential points are not mentioned in the staff report. 25MPH STANDARD IS IRRELEVANT: While the street has a posted 25mph speed limit, cars are driving far below this limit as they approach either intersection with San Mateo Drive, since Wallea Drive ends at a perpendicular intersection. So shorter sight distances should be used. EFFECT ON BIKE RIDERS: Wallea Drive carries a heavy bicycle commute traffic. I assume without having done a census of the riders that primarily they are biking because they cannot afford to drive. If the stop signs are to be enforced, the fines would certainly be unaffordable to these riders. If the signs are not to be enforced. what is the point of having them?  Yield signs are much more appropriate for these intersections. I hope you will approve them in  place of stop signs.  Thank you for your interest.   David Hauk 1045 Wallea Drive Begin forwarded message: From: "David Hauk" <davidhauk_at_(domainremoved)
