The American startup is moving downtown

Dear Council Members,

Here is an interesting Fortune article that may have relevance for
decisions relating to the General Plan and also the upcoming ballot
initiative. The article discusses the trend for startup companies to
increasingly locate in walkable downtown environments, compared to the
driving-focused single use office parks that have been the norm around the
country and in Silicon Valley over the last 50 years.

My concern is that if Menlo Park expects our business growth and revenue to
be focused on single-use driving-focused office parks, we may be planning
for a market that is past its prime. These trends should be considered
when planning for the M2 area as part of the General Plan update. And
these trends should be considered when evaluating a ballot initiative that
would put harder constraints on employment in our downtown.
