SEIU contract negotiations

Honorable council members,

It's distressing that our neighbor city Palo Alto is "giving away the
store" as the Post termed their recent municipal employee contract
negotiations. One hopes California cities and towns learned a lesson
in 2010 when we realized we had done just that in 2007, stars in our
eyes that revenues would rush in and cover for extravagant pensions
and health care that private workers almost never see. Today we are
locked into snowballing benefit costs for decades - and the benefits
are keyed to salaries that are already high.

We were recently reminded that economic cycles have downs as well as
ups - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see we have to hold the
line on wages in times of growth to survive lean times.

Menlo Park is not Palo Alto - we certainly have better leaders. But
the precedent set between PA and the SEIU will press upon you in all
negotiations this year. Please continue your much appreciated
restraint, remembering that you were elected by the residents - not
the employees - and that we pay for this stuff. We ask you to hold
the line.

p.s. Menlo Park is a beautiful place to work - we don't need to bribe
anyone to join this lovely town.
