RE: Safety Issue

The City is currently working with the residents along Santa Cruz Avenue to develop and rank sidewalk project design alternatives that will provide connectivity between downtown Menlo Park and Hillview School. We are in the process of scheduling meetings with the neighbors to work out design alternatives and we hope to have a recommendation for the Transportation Commission and City Council in the near future.

Additionally, our staff has been working closely with the Menlo Park School District to reach out to parents at schools within the district and Menlo Park Public Works staff and Menlo Park Police Department staff recently attended an open house at Hillview School hosted by the district, where we discussed parent’s needs and concerns and we are not working through improvements where they are applicable.

If you have any additional questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Subject: Safety Issue
To Council members
I write to you because of a deep concern I have for the middle school students at Hillview Middle School. I am a Menlo Park property owner and the grandparent of two children in your school system.

I fear that Hillview students walking or riding a bike on Santa Cruz Avenue is an accident waiting to happen. The fact that these students have no sidewalk on which to walk (south side of street east of the school) is extremely dangerous. In addition, I believe there should be additional traffic lights that function before and after school, crossing guards and that cross walks should have blinkers that activate when someone wants to cross i
the street.

These are but a few of the safety suggestions I can offer. Automobiles drive too fast on Santa Cruz Avenue, many young middle schoolers walk or bike and I am very fearful that there will be an accident. I hope that you will be pro active and minimize the risk for such a tragedy occurring.

Thank you for taking this issue up for discussion.
