Hello Honorable mayor and council, † I am writing to honor Mike Harding and support the suggestion that the City of Menlo Park name the San Mateo Drive Bike/Pedestrian bridge in his memory.† † Mike for decades was a citadel for bicycling on the Peninsula. He did this first and foremost with his wheels. He showed up everywhere on his bicycle. At a time when most people were afraid to ride, Mike rode everywhere, on every road. As bicycling picked up in popularity Mike continued to ride. He manned stations around the Peninsula, including here in Belmont, to welcome new riders at Bike To Work Day. And as technology made bicycles lighter and more useful, Mike showed up with the same hardware, now with serious miles under its belt. More importantly for†sustainability†minded people on the Peninsula, Mike was the contact person and project advocacy lead on bicycling; at a time when our bicycling community organizations went through multiple reinventions. One such project was the San Mateo Drive bike bridge in Menlo Park over San Francisquito Creek. † I felt that I could always count on Mikeís presence- as a supporter, volunteer, and bicyclist, riding the talk. Menlo Parkís bicycling community and the Peninsula's bicycling atmosphere today are a result of Mike's dedication to bicycling as a fun means of getting around that†magically†provided all the public policy benefits that policy makers struggle to attain such as reduced traffic, clean air and healthy†citizens. I am sorry to hear of his passing and our community's loss.† † His story in the community would be well served by a dedication and memorial sign if the City of Menlo Park names the San Mateo Drive Bike/Pedestrian bridge in his memory † Best regards, † Gladwyn díSouza Belmont, CA 650-804-8225 1/23/2014
