MCC closure

Dear City Council Member,

I would like the concern expressed by other parents about the delayed
start city-run after school program at Menlo Children’s Center.
Unlike previous years, the program is opening the 3rd week of school
on September 3rd, 7 or even 8 full working days (for Kindergarten)
after the start of school on August 22. To add to this Laurel has also
an additional full day off on Aug 30th. This is obviously a major
inconvenience to the working families who rely upon this service.

As far as I can tell, this was a planned event which could have taken
place at any time. The entire summer is vastly better time for a
shutdown since there are a multitude of day camps and alternatives to
MCC. Importantly, no such alternatives are available during the
school year. Many of us now have to leave work early for a full week
and half even though we’ve enrolled in an after school program.

It’s unclear to me how a decision like this, so divorced from the
needs of the people being served, gets made and approved, but I’d hope
that some part of the city administration would be motivated to
prevent such poor decisions from happening in the future.

A parent.
