Please support the La Entrada community with sidewalks on Sharon Road!

Honorable Councilmembers—

I write to express my deep support for sidewalks on Sharon Ave so that the
hundreds of school children who attend Menlo Park’s other middle school, La
Entrada, can get to school safely. I can think of no location in the City
that is calling out for sidewalks and safety improvements more than Sharon
Ave.

I understand that the Council initiated the funding for the sidewalk
construction and put the sidewalk project into the City's capital projects
pipeline. The project stalled, however, and is at risk of being
deprioritized. But please, let's not let this initiative fail. I can
think of nothing more important than the safety of our young children as
they walk to school.

If there is any council person who is not in support of this project I ask
that you spend a few mornings walking Sharon Road with the children as they
navigate their way to school. On bad or rainy days the deep puddles and
street-parked cars force the kids into the middle of the street (sometimes
all the way to the yellow divider line) putting them directly into traffic
with cars racing to work in conditions with poor visibility. On good days
the children are forced into the street as they need to walk around
sanitation trucks, public buses and construction vehicles. And Sharon road
is a thoroughfare to Sandhill Road and Highway 280 so many commuter cars
are racing through the neighborhood to get to work. The conditions are a
perfect storm and it is a matter of time before a child is seriously hurt
or killed. Please don't let that happen on your watch.

NOW is the time to make the Sharon Road sidewalks a council priority.
Please take action to continue the City's commitment to this important
project.

Sincerely,
Christine Hurley
La Entrada Parent of 3 kids
