Thank you for the Bollards on Olive St.

Hello City Council (and especially the Public Works Dept) —

I want to give a big thank you to those in the Public Works Dept who installed the bollards at one end of Olive St to help enforce the “no parking” strip here. I live on Olive St. and have seen first-hand how dangerous the Olive St/Santa Cruz intersection is for the hundreds of students who use this thoroughfare every day. Before the bollards were installed, it seemed standard practice for many cars to violate the “no parking" sign during Hillview drop off/pick ups, putting walking and biking students at huge risk every single day. When I heard that a young boy on his bike had been “doored” in this area for that very reason, it felt quite unsettling to know that what I had worried about for sometime had finally happened.

What Olive St. really needs to accommodate its status as a major thoroughfare for students is sidewalks, bike lanes, and a speed limit of 25mph (not 30mph). I know that all of this can take time. In the meantime, the bollards are a very meaningful improvement to the safety of this street for students. Now, the bollards enable a helpful, safe passageway for students making their their way through this otherwise dangerous piece of the street.

I appreciate the Public Works Dept’s efforts to install the bollards and keep them there until we can accommodate the additional infrastructure mentioned above.

In appreciation,
Angela Evans
