MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION

Honorable Mayor Mueller and Council Members:

In preparation for your annual Goal Setting Meeting scheduled for this Friday, January 11, 2019, allow me to ask if the MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION can be re-activated in year 2019?
For many years this group was very active; however, it went dormant several years ago. All that is needed to get it up and going is for you to simply appoint seven (7) new, qualified and interested local citizens. Initially they could meet quarterly until such time as there is sufficient staff to support it.
WHY is having an Art Commission important?  For the answer, ask any one of the nearly 58 counties, and 432 cities in California - just about everyone has an Art Commission, EXCEPT for Menlo Park. Even the 52 States have an Art Commission. To the north, neighboring cities of Atherton, Redwood City and San Carlos have them. To the south, Palo Alto has an active program, as does Mountain View and San Jose.

Art brings CULTURE to a community. It can add life in many forms, such as dance, music, theater, paintings, sculpture, poetry, film and others, to name a few. Can you think of life without art? If so, its time, if not long overdue, to reactivate and re-establish the MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION.

The cost will be minimal but the BENEFIT could be significant.

Respectfully,
Jim Lewis
