phasing out fossil fuels

Dear Members of the City Council,

I am so happy that you are representing me; and happy that my vote for you, Drew Combs, helped you gain that seat!

I am wishing all of you a wonderful and productive 2019, both for you and your families; and for our city.

My passion is for global warming to be slowed down before it becomes disastrous for people around the globe: our children, the poor, those in threatened areas such as low-lying islands—and our own Bay Area where we rely on a large Sierra snowpack for water storage. Every little bit counts.

I am asking you to do everything possible to phase out the use of fossil fuels in everyday City business. When cars and trucks in your fleet wear out, replace them with electric or hybrid vehicles. Install solar on roofs of City buildings.

To spread these activities further, pass incentives for citizens and businesses to do the same. Keep improving on our safe bikeways and encourage residents and workers to use feet, bikes, scooters, and skateboards in this lovely city that has few hills and plenty of trees to enjoy while we are outside walking or biking, etc.

And, speaking of trees, I read that there will be a hearing tomorrow about whether to cut down seven large redwoods on El Camino. I cannot attend the meeting, but wish to remind you that trees are among the best bulwarks against carbon pollution. Redwoods have shallow roots; the garages in question could be strengthened to withstand those roots.

Again, my best wishes for a beautiful, healthful, and hopeful new year.
