Heritage Tree removal at 318 Pope

Council members;

I am writing to request that you reject the application to remove a heritage redwood at 318 Pope Street. The heritage tree regulations were designed to address exactly this scenario, where the wishes of a property owner to maximize their investment conflicts with the City residents' desire to maintain a mature tree cover. The new property owners should have known that there was a part of the property that was unbuildable due to the presence of a 40-year old tree. I would also suggest that the Planning Department require a large setback to protect the tree roots. The recent death of a similar large old redwood on Woodland Avenue was due to the house being constructed within 10 feet of the base of the tree.
