Announcing Release of Draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment
Draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment

We are pleased to announce the public release of the San Mateo County Draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=78268d7889&e=6fa0fac571) , a tool to guide the County and its cities in understanding and preparing for sea level rise. Funded through a grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy, the Draft Assessment is an effort of Sea Change (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=ee985e9749&e=6fa0fac571) SMC (http://seachangesmc.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=40c74669d3d70d2d21ece795a&id=d8801afec9&e=6fa0fac571) , the County’s sea level rise initiative administered through the Office of Sustainability.

Report Overview

Using best available sea level rise modeling and local data, the Draft Assessment provides an overview of how flooding and erosion from sea level rise could affect the County and its cities. Specifically, the report includes an analysis of which assets (such as highways, hospitals, and parks) and communities are at risk from different amounts of sea level rise; detailed case studies on 30 representative assets (Asset Vulnerability Profiles); and chapters on adaptation planning and next steps. As a reminder, the case studies are not a prioritized list of the most vulnerable assets, but rather meant to be representative of the different types of assets in the County and to provide a template to further evaluate vulnerability. The report aims to increase awareness of the issue countywide and to provide a foundation for planning and projects that increase resilience and reduce risks.
