Comments on Resolution Affirming City's commitment to a diverse, supportive, inclusive, and protective community

I have read the staff report and attachments concerning a resolution under
consideration by the Council at its meeting scheduled for January 24,
2017 Affirming City's the City's commitment to a diverse, supportive,
inclusive, and protective community. I am writing in support of the

I also support the proposed ordinance adding Chapter 2.58, National
Registry Participation Prohibition, to the Municipal code. I commend
Councilman Mueller for proposing this. The National Registry raises
significant questions about privacy rights and guaranteed constitutional
liberties. We do well to proceed with caution in this area.

I support Menlo Park becoming a Sanctuary City. We will certainly want to
do this in the right way and in solidarity with other cities that have such
ordinances. Further study is warranted, but undue delay is not. I suggest
this be expedited within the City Attorney's office and brought to the next
council meeting for action.

Finally, Welcoming America appears to be a program consistent with the
values of Menlo Park. I only recently became aware of it and have no strong
opinion about the group. However, the goals of the group are laudable. They
appear to be a small organization with a big mission and positive potential.

I have recently been performing a lot of research on my own family's
forebears. It has reinforced my understanding of the United States as a
nation of immigrants. My ancestors come from Ireland, Scotland, England,
France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. Upon arrival
in America most were poor and often subjected to discrimination based on
language, religion, or county of origin. It seems as each generation weaves
into the fabric of America we often forget our own origins and try to keep
others out. Have we learned nothing of the strength that comes with
diversity? I hope that we have, and the Council can affirm that tonight.
