Median on Ravenswood at Alma Street

Dear Councilmembers,

I have been following the news regarding the median that was put up earlier this year along Ravenswood and am writing today in support of removing it. I live on nearby Merrill Street and in addition to making frequent trips to the Menlo Park library and using the gym at Axis, I also am a weekly volunteer at Learning Ally, located on Burgess between Laurel and Alma Streets. The installation of this median has forced me to alter my driving routes and has resulted in much longer travel times between my home and these destinations, especially during commuter hours. In addition, the lines of traffic coming southbound on El Camino and turning right onto Ravenswood are longer than I’ve ever seen since I moved here over six years ago, particularly in the late afternoon.

It appears to me that this experiment has not achieved what was intended by the council and the transportation commission. It doesn’t seem to have made a positive difference but instead has caused increased congestion and longer wait times for drivers. As I understand it, the median was erected so as to eliminate left turns off Ravenswood and onto Alma Street. The intention was to reduce risky driving around the train crossing after a driver was struck and killed by a train. I’ve learned that this driver was traveling westbound and was not making a turn but had become distracted behind the wheel, so the median does not really address the cause of this tragic accident. However, installing a traffic light at this intersection would accomplish what I think the council is aiming to achieve.

In the interests of freeing up the congestion that has resulted from the installation of this median, I strongly suggest that you remove it as soon as possible. If there are meetings of the council when this topic will be discussed, I’d appreciate knowing when they will be held so that I can attend.

Sincerely yours,

Deborah Krass
