bike lanes on El Camino

Dear Council Members: I just read Dana Hendrickson’s op-ed “Should we encourage bicyclists to ride on El Camino Real?” in the Almanac. I long for better biking paths through and across Menlo Park. I have also dreamed of bike lanes with curbs that separate bikes from traffic. Until I read Hendrickson’s op-ed, I thought the idea of separated bike lanes on El Camino was fabulous.

But her arguments make sense. Only mature, skilled bike riders could safely use those lanes with traffic turning left and right in front of north/south bikers.

So now I do wonder if El Camino is the right place to put these separated bike lanes?

I ride my bike, walk, and drive in Menlo Park. To me, one of the most treacherous points for biking is trying to cross El Camino from one side of town to the other. The other horror is the school children whose bikes swamp the sidewalks downtown making them unsafe for pedestrians.

Would the separate north/south bike lanes on El Camino redirect any of the Middle School children who bike ACROSS town and ride on the east/west sidewalks, making them unsafe for pedestrians? I doubt it.

Would the north/south lanes on El Camino make it any easier to get ACROSS town — which is where most of our citizens are biking?

North/south lanes on El Camino would primarily help bikers going through Menlo Park on longer commutes. I am all for encouraging bike commuting, but I think we have problems to solve that will not even be affected by these north/south El Camino bike lanes.

I don’t think this has to be an “either/or” but I also want to warn that these north/south lanes on El Camino are not going to fix the two most difficult problems we have with cyclists in Menlo Park: 1) safely crossing El Camino and 2) getting the school bike traffic off the sidewalks downtown.

Thank you so much for dealing with all these complications and their infinite implications! - Susan Bryan
